The Perilous Gard
by Elizabeth Marie Pope
Kate Sutton was both sensible and clever, and she would not allow herself
to give in to foolish fears. She would not dwell on the injustice of her
being sent, a virtual prisoner, to a remote, cold, and dark part of
England while her beautiful sister remained comfortably at court. She
would not even speculate about Elvenwood Hall, her destination, or the
strange stories she had heard about it. If it really was a 'perilous
gard,' a castle feared by the country folk because of its association
with heathen magic, she didn't believe it. Kate Sutton was not
superstitious. After six cold, wet days of traveling through thick forest
country on horseback, a weary Kate arrived at Elvenwood. There had been
puzzling encounters that preceded her arrival and even more puzzling
encounters that followed. Before long Kate was involved in a series of
events so strange and otherworldly that she would not have believed
them were she not experiencing them herself.
