Spinners

by Donna Jo Napoli and Richard Tchen

What are the secrets that bind together the lives of a solitary crippled man and an innocent girl? In a time long ago, there lived two spinners, as different from each other as could be. One is a beautiful young girl, who spins because she loves it and because it enables her to earn a living for herself and her father. A lonely man also lives by what he spins, but he is driven to it by a destructive force. Once, something so darkly magical happened that he was able to spin straw into gold. But it cost him everything. Nameless and outcast, the man keeps this strange gift a secret locked deep in a heart as bitterly twisted as his deformed body. Yet the heart of this man was once filled with an overflowing love. Circumstances bring these two unlikely people together -- in a dungeon chamber filled with straw and despair. Will the man's special ability rescue the girl? Will the girl find out the truth about her past? Will the complicated and powerful secrets that tie them to each other save or destroy them both?
