The Story of the Stone

by Barry Hughart

(sequel: Eight Skilled Gentlemen)

(sequel to: The Bridge of Birds)

A magic-filled adventure in 'a China that never was', _The Story of the Stone_ draws on ancient Chinese folklore to tell the story of a long-dead evil Prince who has apparently risen from his grave to wreak havoc on the simple monks of a neighbouring valley. It is up to Master Li, a venerable sage 'with a slight flaw in his character,' and his assistant, the immensely strong Number Ten Ox who narrates the story, to set the wakeful spirit at rest. In searching for the mysterious stone from which the Laughing Prince derives his power, the two cross paths with armies of the walking dead, grinning demons, frightful witches and incredible characters such as One-Eyed Wong, Fat Fu and Callous Chou the Pinchfist Prince, before a final showdown with the forces of evil in the dangerous Valley of Sorrows...
